Just returned from a 10 day Silk Road trip, excellent experience. A few reminders I would like to pass to those who are planning their China trip:
1. Always travel with a roll of toilet paper and a gas mask if possible. (The public restrooms are very dirty, unhygienic, smells awful)
2. Bring an umbrella (Sept rains in Xi'an), a hat(for the desert), and light jacket (for trips to high elevations).
3. You may have to stay at a backward village which not always clean for comfortable, and lacksa lot of facilities. It's a good idea to take your own silk sleeping bag liner and lighweight travel towl along with a reasonable supply of tissues, torch, personal toiletries and first aid, and comfortable shoes.
4. Even in some 3-star and 4-star, there is no hairdryer. Bring your own if necessay.
5. Do not photograph the old folk without permission.
