This excursion has been memorable. We have visited the Hanging temple and the Yungang grottoes. .
The Yungang Grottoes are simply wonderful! Over all imagination. These caves are a masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art (from the 5th and 6th centuries) You can see my photos here: http://fotoviaggiando.altervista.org/cina/yungang/yungang.html But photos can give you only a poor idea of the beauty of this site.
Don't miss the Yungang Grottoes. It's possible go by airplane from Beijing to Datong in less than 1 hour.
The Hanging Temple is about 70 km from Datong. This temple is something unique, an architectural wonder, built directly on a sheer precipice and supported by wooden beams. Its buildings are connected by wooden stairs and footbridges. Built more than 1400 years ago, this temple is very interesting and particular, because it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements. We have been very impressed of this temple.
